What the bees taught me about grief and writing during a grief & loss bee retreat.

There I was Heather,

I sat in stillness, surrounded by the scent of pine and propolis.

Inside the BeeZen Hut, light filtered in only slightly through the slats—just enough to catch glimpses of the bees moving with deep, deliberate purpose.

I could hear them: not one unified buzz, but a layered harmony—

four distinct levels of hum, each hive with its own voice.

 

Over a quarter-million bees at work.

It felt like sitting in a meditation bell. Or maybe a motorcycle coasting across ocean swells—grounded, alive, and somehow floating all at once.

That grief retreat did something I didn’t know I needed.


It reset my senses.


And in doing so, it helped me reconnect with emotions I’d quietly tucked away—unwritten words, unspoken truths, the echoes of love and loss still humming inside me.

From that place—fully felt, fully alive—I wrote.


Not to perform. Not to tidy up the grief.


But to honor it.

To give shape to something sacred and unsaid.
 To let grief speak.
